Dear readers,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! My wish for each of you - for all of us - is that 2014 be a year of joy: joyful progress, joyful experience, joyful achievement.

On a somber note: it is with shock and sadness that I report the unexpected passing of Ken Holm, the wonderful collector of western art whose interview and artwork photos graced the November issue of the Artzine. I am deeply grateful to have known Ken and to have had the chance to experience his magnificent collection firsthand. There is a lovely obituary to Ken posted online, with suggestions for memorial contributions.

American Miniatures Show - Settlers West Gallery, Tucson, AZ
February 8

This is my first time exhibiting with the Settlers West American Miniatures Show, and I'm proud to take part. I'm sending two 9x12 pieces which form a diptych - a lovely pair when hung together. This bunch of blaze-faced youngsters had just come galloping up and were swirling about in a wonderful jumble of color and snort.

NEW at Mountain Trails Gallery - Jackson Hole, Wyoming

"Casanova", 20 x 16 scratchboard (right)

This Yellowstone bull elk was pure joy to bring to life in scratchboard; the finished work has a feeling of dimensionality that took me pleasantly by surprise.

"Casanova" is one of 3 images that I am licensing to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in 2014 for their conservation fundraiser auctions. The images are being reproduced as metal prints, and the reproductions are insanely good. If you are an RMEF member, I hope you get the chance to bid on one of the prints! For now, "Casanova" and "Too Sexy" (another elk image) prints are only available through the RMEF banquets.

Western Masters Art Show - Great Falls, MT
Mar. 19-22

"Burnished", 16 x 20 scratchboard (right)

This will be my third year at the Western Masters show, and I'm beavering away (learned that term from my Brit buddies) preparing new work for the show. There will be much more to come; I'll be sharing new images in the next several Artzines.

Mark your calendars now for the show!

And yes, I have a piece in the CM Russell Auction taking place that week as well - stay tuned!

READERS RESPOND - footnotes to the December Artzine:

"I understand why they are selling the scratchboards as fast as you can send them. They are STUNNING!" Many thanks, Kathleen M.!

"When I saw those wolves. I was just scanning down and BOOM!! there they were. I literally almost fell out of my chair. I'm not kidding. They are stunning. The light and the shadows are perfect. You never fail to astound me. I learn every time I get your newsletter." Sandra S., that was one helluva compliment - thank you!

That's it for January (YAY, we're past the solstice and the days are getting longer! even if imperceptibly...) I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter (and thank you to the many readers who respond after each Artzine, thus giving me good material for the "Footnotes" section :-) - if so, I encourage you to share it with anyone and everyone. I appreciate your help in building a bigger audience for my work!

Warmest regards,
Julie T. Chapman
